Whole Person Development: Enhancing the Potential of Student Workers

Most IT divisions are familiar with student workers and recognize that they are essential to the mission of their respective institutions. In the worst cases, though, student workers perform primarily low-priority functions and little thought is given to their professional development. As IT managers, we can motivate and challenge our student workers in ways that provide meaningful contexts for their professional futures. This presentation will explore several models of student worker development and provide best practices for enhancing the potential of student workers not just for the organization, but their own teaching and learning. Giving students real-world experience can be worth much more than just their bi-weekly paycheck.
