Virus Outbreak! Inoculate your campus against malware

Presenter(s):
Andy Voelker

Is your campus constantly fighting the onslaught of viruses, spyware, and other rogue code? A well rounded plan can help inoculate your campus to prevent these problems.

This presentation discusses the 4 tiers of malware prevention, which includes desktop security, enforcing security remediation on the desktop, securing the network, and teaching users beneficial security practices. Examples and best practices will be given for each tier as well as how their application affects infrastructure, IT personnel, and users. We will also discuss Western Carolina University’s usage of some of these techniques and how we recently reduced reported malware incidents by approximately 75%. The bulk of this presentation focuses on infrastructure and initiatives, but a portion at the end will shed light on individual products, tweaks, and specific procedures that have seen success on WCU’s campus. We will also focus on the most difficult audience, security for student owned machines.
