Technology Funding Out of End of Year Funds: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

William Frady

Discussion Session or Round Table Discussion

At Western Carolina University, we have had a common practice of funding technology out of End of Year funds. This has been especially prevalent in purchasing classroom technology and computers. In good budget years, we have made significant progress in updating our classrooms and labs. In bad budget years, we have usually received enough funding to just “patch the holes” and keep things running. Unfortunately, in the ugly budget years, as we have seen in the last several years, we watch the holes grow and grow till it takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to get things back on track. Funding technology out of End of Year funds is just not efficient. It does not allow for year-to-year refresh plans and in the ugly budget times, it’s a pitfall that we have experienced that can be too deep to recover from. We look forward to discussing our ideas with others and their ideas to help each other deal with these funding issues.
